I hope and pray that you will turn your eyes upon Jesus

Max Bunyan
Local Singer/songwriter to perform Friday concert
Wed, Aug. 27 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DODGE CITY — Max Bunyan looks like Burl Ives or a Santa Claus with his pearly white beard, rotund figure, and jolly, smiling face. But when this Dodge City hometown boy sings, he sounds like an angel.
Bunyan will share his songwriting and singing talents from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Carnegie Center for the Arts’ free Final Friday Art is Ageless concert.
Shortly after retiring in 2005 as executive director of Santa Fe Trail Community Corrections, Bunyan released his first CD, “Follow Your Heart.” Since then, he has written 400 songs in a variety of genres and hopes to complete his sixth CD, “Mercy and Grace,” by the end of the year.
“One of the biggest changes in my career is finding a freedom to be the musical me that God created me to be,” said Bunyan, who writes and performs folk, cowboy, gospel, smooth jazz, Jesus jazz, country, New American patriot love songs, novelty/fun songs and tribute songs “for the special people who have touched my life, like my wife, Claudia.”
Another of those "special people" is his 88-year-old mother, Maxine Beadle, a Good Samaritan Center resident who played “boogie-woogie” on the piano when Bunyan was growing up.
“I call her my business manager,” Bunyan said. “Mom gave me some good advice. She said, ‘Do lots of fun songs and love songs,’ so that’s what I’ve put together for my Carnegie concert that I’m calling ‘Love and Laughter… From My Heart.’”
Bunyan’s first memory of singing was “Sweet and Low, Winds of the Western Sea” in third grade at Sunnyside Elementary School.
“That was my musical awakening,” he said. “The lights came on, and I realized that I loved music. The notes resonated in my spirit.”
Bunyan has performed since then on KGNO radio programs, the TV show “Horizons of Faith” in Miami, Fla. and in more than 700 performances of the Seventh U.S. Army Soldiers Chorus in Europe.
He also has sung at the Kansas Wheat House in Cimarron, the Meade County Historical Society, Sawlogs & Strings summer concerts, Busters in Sun City and the Holiday Inn in Joplin, Mo.
“I’m especially proud of my song about Greensburg (from the CD “Here and Now”),” said Bunyan. “It went all the way to number two on the SoundClick music charts.”
Bunyan also has been invited to preach and sing at several churches: United Methodist at Mullinville for 80 women survivors of the Greensburg tornado; the Church of God in Ashland; Victory Life Fellowship and Christ the King Lutheran, both in Dodge City; and First Christian in Cimarron, where he ministered in music to the Christian Bikers Association.
“I dedicated my song, ‘Rolling Thunder,’ to Gary Mills, president of the Thunder of the Plains Christian Motorcycle Association Chapter from Ashland, and to all the Christian bikers who were there that Sunday,” he said.
“I wrote a song ‘Most of All’ for my musical friend, Barry Ward, who has moved to Colorado. One line goes, ‘I will miss my friends on the Kansas prairies most of all’ to the central point: ‘I must follow God’s call most of all.’”
Bunyan’s CDs “Follow Your Heart” and “Songs for Soldiers and People Who Love Them” are on Wal-Mart’s worldwide online music store.
His music also is distributed online by CD Baby to Apple iTunes and other outlets.
Locally, his CDs are available at Hastings, Briar & Hale Music, Trails West, Christian Book House and the chiropractic office of Dr. Scott Fischer.
“I write my songs from my experience,” Bunyan said. “My songs ‘The Dade County Jail (parts one and two)’ are about my experiences as an officer at the Dade County Jail in Miami from 1980 to 1992.
“Sam Ormes created and directed the ICTV inmate correctional TV network for 27 years, and it was in its early stages when I was there. Three years ago, I reconnected with Sam, and I’m proud to say they used my songs ‘Dade County Jail’ for their Bible Study theme song every Thursday.”

"Will There Be Motorcycles in Heaven?"
Sun, Jul. 27 2008
I don't know....But, I really hope so. (One of the new songs that I sang today)
Thank you Pastor David Johnson of The First Christian Church in Cimarron, Kansas for having me sing at your annual "Biker" Sunday.
There were Harley-Davidsons, Hondas, Suzuki's, and a lot of other motorcycles this morning.
It was also great seeing my good friend, Gary Mills (President of CMA Chapter "Thunder on the Plains/Ashland, Kansas) who shared about the great ministries of the Christian Motorcyclist Association.
"Thunder" is also a new song that I sang this morning and is dedicated to Gary Mills and all of the CMA riders.

"Follow Your Heart" CD.... Stories Behind the Songs/Lyrics
Tue, Jun. 10 2008
Many of you have asked how I came to write some of the songs on my "Follow Your Heart" CD.
YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING RIGHT HERE ON THIS PAGE
Welcome to the "Lyrics & Stories" Section
All Lyrics/Music by Max G. Bunyan (c) 2004(BMI)
All Rights Reserved
1. Ride Cowboy Ride
This is a "Rodeo Cowboy" Song inspired by R.C. Trotter M.D. and written as a tribute to Dodge City Days; an annual event drawing 100,000 tourist to our World Famous Boot Hill and Front Street Replica, shades of Matt Dillon, Miss Kitty, Doc and Festus from the TV Classic "Gunsmoke", our Western hospitality, and a great Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association Rodeo.
Lyrics
Here he comes out of chute # 5
He's got 8 seconds just to stay alive
Ride Cowboy Ride (3x)
(2)
He's shooting for the finals, going for the gold
And a TV spot when his story is told
So Ride Cowboy Ride, Ride Cowboy Ride
Ride Cowboy Ride
*
2. I'm In Love With You
This is a love song, ocean waves, smooth Brazillian Jazz. It's a Love Song for my wife Claudia on our 38th Wedding Anniversary.
Lyrics
I could be the greatest singer since Garth Brooks
Write songs like Willie Nelson
Have Alan Jackson's looks
But, I'm in love with you
And life doesn't get any better than that!
I'm in love with you and love doesn't get any better than that!
*
3. The Ballad of Old Dodge City
There is an incredible fascination with "The Old West". The 50s and 60's spawned a variety of TV Westerns which still influence us today. I worked at the World Famous Boot Hill and Frontstreet Replica while going through high school and college. It was a lot of fun!? I hope you enjoy a glimpse of my famous home town.
Lyrics
Saddle up wrangler, this is for real
This is "How the West Was Won"
Driving longhorn cattle on the Santa Fe Trail
And packing a lightning fast gun.
We've come to a special time, We've come to a special place
We're living right now, In the middle of it all
Right here! Right now! In Old Dodge City!
*
4. A Love Song: The Kansas Cowboy Symposium
The Kansas Cowboy Symposium held in Dodge City, Kansas was a defining musical moment in my life (2004). It brought me back into the music world as a singer and a songwriter. I call it a love song, because I loved being at this special event.? This is a warm ballad with images of how our West was won.
Lyrics
They came from far and wide
Over endless prairies and the country side
In faith they made that long and lonely ride
To The Kansas Cowboy Symposium
(2)
They followed a cowboy's dream
To old Dodge City where they thought it seemed.
They could remember it best, In the heart of the West
At the Kansas Cowboy Symposium
*
5. Sunday Morning Miracles for a Cowboy
I met Jack Hannah (Sons of the San Joaquin) at the Tumbleweed Festival in Garden City, Kansas a couple of years ago. This is my special, musical prayer for him............and for you!
Lyrics
Today will you pray for a cowboy?
Because you never know just what he's going through
Today will you pray for a cowboy?
And ask God to do what only HE can do.
Sunday morning miracles for a cowboy
God?please send your unlimited supply
Sunday morning miracles for a cowboy
God keep him riding strong until he's home on high
*
6. Cowboys for The King
There are only 4 of them on stage, but, they sound like "God's Magnificent Seven".? I'm talking about Sons of the San Joaquin.? This is a special tribute song that I wrote after meeting them at the Tumbleweed Festival in Garden City, Kansas.
Lyrics
Cowboys for The King (2x)
They ride tall in the saddle, they play and sing
Sons of The San Joaquin
(2)
Cowboys for The King (2x)
They should be on TV with Larry King
Sons of The San Joaquin
Chorus
They sing a cowboy's song, They live a cowboy's dream
They value right from wrong
Sons of The San Joaquin
*
7. Pray Away
Noted author G.K. Chesterson said, "The most astonishing thing about miracles is that they happen". "Pray Away" is a song that actually came out of one of my prayer times....Just singing, crying out to God with my guitar.
Lyrics
Father, Father, thank you for today
Father, Father, hear me when I pray
And the Lord said,
"Lift your eyes toward Heaven and look for a brighter day today and Pray Away...Pray Away...Pray Away"
*
8. God's Prosperity
I went to a financial seminar recently and learned that many people barely scrape by living from paycheck to paycheck. This is a gospel folk song that came out of my reading about Jesus, and His "Feeding of the 5,000".
Lyrics
Jesus didn't wear fancy suits or drive a Cadillac car
Where ever He went, He was Heaven sent
And He never went too far
From everything that He needed, and you can plainly see
This is the beginning of God's Prosperity.
Chorus
God's Prosperity, Whoa!
There's always plenty for you and me
God's Prosperity, Whoa!
There's always plenty for you and me!
*
9. I Want Jesus to Walk With Me
Life is not easy, but this jazz vocal/guitar arrangement is for the tough times in your life.
10. I'd rather Be Singin' and Playin'
This is a novelty/fun song with some serious things between the sings and the strings. But, I hope you enjoy the fun parts.
Lyrics
I'd rather be singin' and playin'
Than put on another pound
I'd rather be singin' and playin'
Than carry this great big elephant all around town.
Lord help me take this song and apply it to myself
And practice everyword I'm sayin'
(Chorus)
I want to be a heavyweight in the music world
But not with all of these pounds.
I want to be a heavyweight in the music world
When I play my guitar, when I sing my songs,
When I make my musical sounds!
(2)
I'd rather be singin' and playin'
Than pop a Pop Tart in my mouth
I'd rather be singin' and playin'
And take a long Winter's musical tour down South
Lord help me take this song and apply it to myself
And practice every word I'm sayin'
I'd rather be singin' and playin'
And pass those 31 flavors right on bye.........
Lord help me take this song and apply it to myself
And practice every word I'm sayin'
(Chorus)
*
11. Eye of the Hurricane
Sometime ago on the David Letterman Show, they were discussing the tranquility of being inside the eye of a hurricane. My song is a touch of mellow jazz and tranquility after personally going through Hurricane Andrew.
12. The Dade County Jail (Part 1)
The Dade County Jail located in Miami, Florida is a very challenging place in which to work.? I know, I worked there for 12 years. This mellow jazz spiritual with a "Bossa Nova" beat and guitar/vocal, retraces my steps in that towering place and discovers a bright light in the darkness.
Lyrics
I woke up this mornin' singin' and prayin'
The Bible in my hand said "You Can Not Fail."
Pack up your worries, send them on a vacation
Jesus is coming down to The Dade County Jail.
(2)
Men will dream dreams and some will see visions
A light will pierce the darkness that can not fail.
You'll see them fall and cry for mercy
Jesus is coming down to The Dade County Jail.
(Chorus)
If you feel you've been forsaken
By those wayward steps you've taken.
Come and let Him hold you in His love.
He wants you sinner meek and lowly
He'll make you righteous, clean and Holy
Come and let Him hold you in His love.
*
13. The Dade County Jail (Part 2)
Something of a jazz waltz, this offering is strengthened by spiritual reinforcements and undaunted by the stark realities of life behind bars.
14. When Johnny Comes Marching Home
This is an old song with my new personal lyrics for our war-torn times.
15. A Cowboy for Jesus
As the song says, "Strumming my guitar, Heaven's not so far away. Will you come and ride along?"
16. God's Not Slack in His Promises
With a folk/blues flavor...a better title might have been "Just Expect a Miracle". When you run out of rope, don't give up hope. Don't get hysterical, just expect a miracle! He'll help you cope!
17. Don't Give Up on God
Life is hard but God is good!? This has a mellow guitar/vocal sound. God won't give up on you!
18. Are You Saved?
19. John 3:16
Lyrics
Tell them the war is over,
The victory has been won
The enemy has been defeated
God gave His only Son
(Chorus)
For God so loved the world
That He gave His only Son
Tell them the war is over,
The victory has been won.
(2)
If you're broken hearted
And damage has been done
Come drink the healing water
God gave His only Son
(Chorus)
For God so loved the world
That He gave His only Son
Come on home to Jesus,
The victory has been won.
20. The Bunyan Family Tree
This is a fun song, a kid's song for all of us who are young at heart....and dedicated to Paul, John, Bill, and the greater Bunyan Family around the world where ever you are!
Lyrics
(Chorus)
Our family tree, our family tree
You'll find a lot of history
With lots of folks like you and me
On The Bunyan Family Tree.
(1)
Now here's a picture of Grand Papa Paul
With Babe his Blue Ox in Minnesota one Fall
You can see he was the tallest man of all
On The Bunyan Family Tree.
(Chorus)
(2)
John Bunyan our great hero, was a preacher and a tinker
When he carried his pots and pans, he was also quite a clinker.
But, "Pilgrim's Progress" is his greatest story
For all of us and for God's glory.
(Chorus)
(3)
Bill Bunyan achieved extraordinary fame
As The Hamburger King of the Kansas Plains
He traveled the State with a tasty plan
To find the Best Burger in all the land.
(Chorus)

Greensburg, Kansas....NEW Song in Progress
Thu, May. 10 2007
Some of you know that our family lived through Hurricane Andrew in Miami, Florida.
It was an awesome experience that really helps me to identify with the Tornado victims in Greensburg, Kansas and the surrounding communities.
During our years in Kansas...I've worked with many people in Greensburg, about an hour East of Dodge City.
I was touched and inspired by Ann Dixon's photo and story in a recent Dodge City Daily Globe account of the Tornado which leveled this community...and by their courage to rebuild.
This inspired me...and I have a new song in progress...I hope it will be available soon....that it will give hope to the Tornado victims, and touch your heart to help them.

Welcome to the "Lyrics & Stories" Section
All Lyrics/Music by Max G. Bunyan (c) December 2004 (BMI)
CD Released 2005
It was a lot of fun!
I call it a love song, because I loved being at this special event. This is a warm ballad with images of how our West was won.
Lyrics
They came from far and wide
Over endless prairies and the country side
In faith they made that long and lonely ride
To The Kansas Cowboy Symposium
(2)
They followed a cowboy's dream
To old Dodge City where they thought it seemed.
They could remember it best, In the heart of the West
At the Kansas Cowboy Symposium
*
5. Sunday Morning Miracles for a Cowboy
I met Jack Hannah (Sons of the San Joaquin) at the Tumbleweed Festival in Garden City, Kansas a couple of years ago. This is my special, musical prayer for him............and for you!
Lyrics
Today will you pray for a cowboy?
Because you never know just what he's going through
Today will you pray for a cowboy?
And ask God to do what only HE can do.
Sunday morning miracles for a cowboy
God please send your unlimited supply
Sunday morning miracles for a cowboy
God keep him riding strong until he's home on high
*
6. Cowboys for The King
There are only 4 of them on stage, but, they sound like "God's Magnificent Seven". I'm talking about Sons of the San Joaquin. This is a special tribute song that I wrote after meeting them at the Tumbleweed Festival in Garden City, Kansas.
Lyrics
Cowboys for The King (2x)
They ride tall in the saddle, they play and sing
Sons of The San Joaquin
(2)
Cowboys for The King (2x)
They should be on TV with Larry King
Sons of The San Joaquin
Chorus
They sing a cowboy's song, They live a cowboy's dream
They value right from wrong
Sons of The San Joaquin
*
7. Pray Away
Noted author G.K. Chesterson said, "The most astonishing thing about miracles is that they happen". "Pray Away" is a song that actually came out of one of my prayer times....Just singing, crying out to God with my guitar.
Lyrics
Father, Father, thank you for today
Father, Father, hear me when I pray
And the Lord said,
"Lift your eyes toward Heaven and look for a brighter day today and Pray Away...Pray Away...Pray Away"
*
8. God's Prosperity
I went to a financial seminar recently and learned that many people barely scrape by living from paycheck to paycheck. This is a gospel folk song that came out of my reading about Jesus, and His "Feeding of the 5,000".
Lyrics
Jesus didn't wear fancy suits or drive a Cadillac car
Where ever He went, He was Heaven sent
And He never went too far
From everything that He needed, and you can plainly see
This is the beginning of God's Prosperity.
Chorus
God's Prosperity, Whoa!
There's always plenty for you and me
God's Prosperity, Whoa!
There's always plenty for you and me!
*
9. I Want Jesus to Walk With Me
Life is not easy, but this jazz vocal/guitar arrangement is for the tough times in your life.
10. I'd rather Be Singin' and Playin'
This is a novelty/fun song with some serious things between the sings and the strings. But, I hope you enjoy the fun parts.
Lyrics
I'd rather be singin' and playin'
Than put on another pound
I'd rather be singin' and playin'
Than carry this great big elephant all around town.
Lord help me take this song and apply it to myself
And practice everyword I'm sayin'
(Chorus)
I want to be a heavyweight in the music world
But not with all of these pounds.
I want to be a heavyweight in the music world
When I play my guitar, when I sing my songs,
When I make my musical sounds!
(2)
I'd rather be singin' and playin'
Than pop a Pop Tart in my mouth
I'd rather be singin' and playin'
And take a long Winter's musical tour down South
Lord help me take this song and apply it to myself
And practice every word I'm sayin'
I'd rather be singin' and playin'
And pass those 31 flavors right on bye.........
Lord help me take this song and apply it to myself
And practice every word I'm sayin'
(Chorus)
*
11. Eye of the Hurricane
Sometime ago on the David Letterman Show, they were discussing the tranquility of being inside the eye of a hurricane. My song is a touch of mellow jazz and tranquility after personally going through Hurricane Andrew.
12. The Dade County Jail (Part 1)
The Dade County Jail located in Miami, Florida is a very challenging place in which to work.
Life is hard but God is good! This has a mellow guitar/vocal sound. God won't give up on you!
18. Are You Saved?
19. John 3:16
Lyrics
Tell them the war is over,
The victory has been won
The enemy has been defeated
God gave His only Son
(Chorus)
For God so loved the world
That He gave His only Son
Tell them the war is over,
The victory has been won.
(2)
If you're broken hearted
And damage has been done
Come drink the healing water
God gave His only Son
(Chorus)
For God so loved the world
That He gave His only Son
Come on home to Jesus,
The victory has been won.
20. The Bunyan Family Tree
This is a fun song, a kid's song for all of us who are young at heart....and dedicated to Paul, John, Bill, and the greater Bunyan Family around the world where ever you are!
Lyrics
(Chorus)
Our family tree, our family tree
You'll find a lot of history
With lots of folks like you and me
On The Bunyan Family Tree.
(1)
Now here's a picture of Grand Papa Paul
With Babe his Blue Ox in Minnesota one Fall
You can see he was the tallest man of all
On The Bunyan Family Tree.
(Chorus)
(2)
John Bunyan our great hero, was a preacher and a tinker
When he carried his pots and pans, he was also quite a clinker.
But, "Pilgrim's Progress" is his greatest story
For all of us and for God's glory.
(Chorus)
(3)
Bill Bunyan achieved extraordinary fame
As The Hamburger King of the Kansas Plains
He traveled the State with a tasty plan
To find the Best Burger in all the land.
(Chorus)

Words & Music (c) 2006 by Max G. Bunyan
America we're STILL Free,
America we're STILL Free,
Thank God for each soldier
who fought for our FREEDOM
In America, we're STILL Free
America we're STILL Free,
America we're STILL Free,
Thank God for our Veterans
and their families this morning
In America, we're STILL Free
These are partial lyrics to another new song that I've written....It's scheduled for production sometime in December. I'll keep you posted when it actually becomes available.
Reminder:On this Veterans' Day...Will you go out of your way today to thank a Veteran for his or her service to our country?

Johnny Cash of Kansas Reviewer: Alexandra Lajoux From the first notes of this CD, I felt a blessed assurance: The great Johnny Cash lives on! Patriotic messages make this a particularly inspiring collection.
Thank You For Honoring Our Soldiers With Your Music!
Reviewer: I heard you speak and sing during the Memorial Day Services at our Kansas Veteran's Cemetery in Ft. Dodge. Thank you for your songs for soldiers and making a difference with your music!
When Johnny Comes Marching Home 2006
Reviewer: This is a compelling song for our war-torn times. May God keep all of our soldiers safe until they are finally home. Max, thank you for your special arrangement of this song.
I Like this CD!
Reviewer: The music grows on you...A variety of genres...Mellow All the Way.
"Follow Your Heart" is the Surprise CD of The Year!
Reviewer: A Friend of the Family
FOLLOW YOUR HEART is an acoustic CD filled with surprises, contrast and variety.
Max mixes up the music...going from Rodeo Cowboy to Love Jazz to Historical Cowboy to a couple of Contemporary Christian Cowboy songs.
Max seems to enjoy writing tribute songs to people who have made an impact on his life (You can catch glimpses of this in his CD liner notes).
When Max changes directions...he moves us into a mixture of lighter gospel folk songs...Takes us into the Dade County Jail and back out again with some Jesus Jazz. 20 songs make this an amazing CD. You don't see that kind of quantity on most CDs.
In many ways FOLLOW YOUR HEART is both secular and sacred...almost a sampler CD which allows you to pick and choose from a variety of genres (Cowboys,Acoustic Gospel, and Mellow Jazz).
If you're a tourist you'll like songs of the West. If you're a Christian you'll like these offerings. If you're a veteran or have someone you love in the military, his one patriotic song will stir your heart.
If you're going through a tough time in your life you'll find encouragement and hope in Max's music.
If you want to smile a while there's a novelty song or two for you...too. Remember, IT ALL STARTS IN YOUR HEART!

Partial Lyrics to "Songs for Soldiers & People Who Love Them"
Sat, Sep. 16 2006
All Words & Music (c) 2006 by Max G. Bunyan (BMI)
1. Because You're Over There (3:25)
I've never had to worry about IEDs or suicide bombers in town
I've never had to wonder, "Are those good guys or bad guys"? or snipers trying to shoot me down.
(Chorus)
But, you're my HEROES and I want you to know we care.
We're safer tonight in my home town Because you're over there.
We're safer tonight in my home town Because you're over there!
2. Every Time I See a Soldier (3:25)
Every time I see a Soldier
My heart grows bolder and bolder
To stand up for America today.
And every time I see a Soldier
My heart grows bolder and bolder
To cry out for America when I pray.
Let's make every day a God Bless America Day!
*** When I see Old Glory flying
In my heart there's no denying
I'm thankful for Our HEROES on the battlefield today.
And when I think about our FREEDOM and the blood it cost 80,000 of them
I'm humbled to fall on my knees and pray.
Let's make every day a God Bless America Day!
3. Home Town Heroes (3:40)
Home Town HEROES in the deserts of Iraq
You're our home town HEROES in the deserts of Iraq

Happy Father's Day Dad......You're My Hero!
Sun, Jun. 18 2006
A Tribute to: W.F. (Frank) Beadle my 88 year old step-father. He is and has always been an example of "It's what you do with what you've got and never mind how much you've got that pays off in the end." Growing up in the great depression....he had to drop out of school in the 6th grade to work and help out in his large family. Dad has always been an example of hard work and strong ethics. His admonition to me while I was going through school was, "Study something that will help you earn a living". During middle school, Dad didn't think much about my playing football. But after I became the only junior in the starting line up of our Dodge City High School football team.....He and my extended family attended all of the out of town and home games. Dad, thank you for always being there for me....Like a Rock! My Dad is also a proud Veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Memorial Day Services: The Kansas Veterans' Cemetery
Mon, May. 29 2006
Today I shared "The Oath" that every soldier takes upon entering our Armed Forces. And closely connected to that are the 6 articles contained in the Code of Conduct of the U.S. Armed Forces. I want to thank Brian L. Bohlman for his book, " So Help Me God" which led me to that information. It was also an emotional day as we said farewell to Larry Montandon, Manager of the Kansas Cemetery at Ft. Dodge. Larry will be taking a similar position in Springfield, Missouri. Barry Ward and I also shared in musical tributes to our Soldiers and Veterans. Thank You to all of the others who made it a special day to honor those who keep us free!

(#4) Let love and friendship on this day (Hurrah! 2 x)
Their choicest treasures then display (Hurrah! 2 x).......
Let each one perform some part ......to fill with joy each warrior's heart....And we'll all thank God when....MY JOHNNY Comes Marching Home....When YOUR BRANDON Comes Marching Home.....When YOUR SARAH Comes Marching Home. TODAY, WILL YOU FILL WITH JOY EACH WARRIOR'S HEART?
Thank A Soldier or Veteran....Today is Armed Forces Day
Sat, May. 20 2006
Will you take time to call, e-mail, write a card or a note, or just personally "Thank a Veteran" or someone currently serving on active duty in our Armed Forces? You will be glad that you did....and they will be strengthened and encouraged by your appreciation for their service to our country!
Happy Mother's Day Mom!
Sun, May. 14 2006
My mother has always been a great encourager to me in my music. She played piano for many years and has always had an incredible sense of what's Hot or Cool in music. She recently told me that as popular as he is.....my music is better than James Blount. She saw Ray Charles when he came to our Civic Center a number of years ago. Mom is very good about sharing what she hears in my music. If a song needs some fine tuning, she readily points it out. Last year Mom said I needed to write some happier songs.....So I came up with "Egg on My Face" and a re-mix called "The New Home on The Range" Medley. We celebrated Mother's Day last night and I played my latest Demo of 6 SONGS FOR SOLDIERS and PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM. She liked the uptempo beat in all of the songs... drums... piano... vocals. "Because You're Over There"; "Home Town Heroes"; She liked the haunting jazz sound of "Baghdad Lullaby". That's my Mom! Advancing years and health challenges have ended her piano playing days....But she still LOVES music and her musical son. Mom THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING ALL OF THESE YEARS!

This is my musical PASSION!
I write songs in a variety of genres (New Patriotic, Jazz Vocals, Cowboy, Gospel, and Folk Songs). But my PASSION is writing and singing "Songs for Soldiers and The People Who Love Them". God willing, my PASSION will never change until; as the USO proudly says, "We'll be there...Until Everyone Comes Home."

Hallowed Ground....Kansas Veterans' Cemetary....Ft. Dodge, KS.
Wed, Apr. 5 2006
If you live in Dodge City, will you take a moment to visit this treasured resource/facility right here in our own community?
If you are traveling....driving East or West on Higway 400 East through Dodge City; will you stop and pay your respect to our soldiers burried here?
Larry Montandon and his team do an outstanding job in caring for this valuable new cemetary.
I hope you will take time to drive through to the crest of the hill where the shelter is located...get out of your car.... and look out across the hallowed ground...in the beauty of the quietness and view....spend a few moments to think about our Freedom and the sacrifices others have made with their lives to keep us Free.

Every time I see a soldier
My heart grows bolder and bolder
To stand up for America today.
Every time I see a soldier
My heart grows bolder and bolder
To cry out for America when I pray.
Let's make every day A God Bless America Day!
Let's make every day A God Bless America Day!
(2)
When I see Old Glory flyin'
In my heart there's no denyin'
I'm thankful for our heroes on the battlefield today.
When I think about our freedom
And the blood it cost 20,000 of them
I'm humbled to fall on my knees and pray.
Let's make every day A God Bless America Day!
Let's make every day A God Bless America Day!

Sun, Apr. 2 2006
Sunday night I sang (1) "Every Time I See A Soldier" and (2)"We Honor Your Name By Candlelight" at the First Assembly of God Church in Dodge City (Pastor David Graves).
One gentleman came up to me later and said, "My nephew just went to Iraq. Thank you for reminding us about our soldiers who are fighting for our freedom. Thank you for your focus!"
"Soon I Will Be Done" The Story Behind the Song....
Sun, Mar. 19 2006
While this is an old traditional spiritual, I think you'll enjoy the Brazillian Jazz flavor of my new arrangement.
Why am I featuring it on my "Home Town Heroes...U.S.A." CD project?
Because it was one of the award winning songs we/The United States 7th Army Soldiers' Chorus performed at an International Choral Festival at the Hague, in The Netherlands when we competed against 75 other nations of the world...and we WON # 1.
This is my special tribute to the late General William W. Quinn who saw the value of The 7th Army Soldiers' Chorus and our mission "Friendship Through Music "("Freundshaft Durch Musik") and opened the doors for us to make it happen.
It is also my personal tribute to an incredible group of "Home Town Heroes from all across the U.S.A. that I had the honor of singing with for 2 1/2 years while we were members of The 7th Army Soldiers' Chorus in Europe. (We were stationed in Boeblingen, Germany and Heidleberg, Germany)
My appreciation goes out to the first chorus which preceeded us....and to the many 7th Army Soldiers' Choruses which have continued after us.
Thanks for the memories to all of you and to:

"Protecting America Today" The Story Behind The Song
Mon, Mar. 13 2006
As a songwriter, I'm always with pen and paper where ever I go.
I was at a Jam Session connected to a popular music festival about a year and a half ago.
One player, a lanky cowboy from Alaska riddled the night air with 4 letter words every time he spoke, when he played his guitar and sang.
Profanity saturated his 15 minutes of fame.
But, his crowning moment came when he got up to leave. It turned out that he was a Veteran. And he reminded everyone that while they might not support our troops....that we were all able to sit around, play our guitars and sing....because of the sacrifice our soldiers were making around the world.
That thought went into my little songwriter's note book and 18 months later "Protecting America Today" has become a reality on my new "Home Town Heroes...U.S.A." CD Project.
I thought you'd like to know.

Song #2: "Because You're Over There" Words and Music (C) 2006 by Max G. Bunyan, All Rights Reserved
We owe our Service Men and Women an overwhelming debt of grattitude.
While I know that there are many who oppose American Military Forces being in Iraq; I believe that our troops still deserve our full support!
Partial Lyric:
You're my Heroes and I want you to know we care.
And we're safer tonight in my home town Because You're Over There!
"Home Town Heroes...U.S.A." Stories Behind the Songs
Fri, Mar. 10 2006
1. Home Town Heroes
Shortly after I got out of the Army, I worked for WTNS Radio in Coshocton, Ohio. The title track for this project was actually birthed recently while I was doing some research on the internet. I saw that a Zanesville, Ohio TV station (Near Coshocton) was running a daily feature on their "Home Town Heroes"...and an idea for the song was born.
In my song, I include a special salute to our "Home Town Heroes" from Dodge City, Kansas; Millbrook, Alabama, Coshocton, Ohio; Zanesville, Ohio; Boone, Iowa; Miami, Florida; Los Angeles, California; New York City; Trumbull, Connecticut; Fort. Leonardwood, Missouri; Fort. Gordon, Georga; Fort. Dix, New Jersey; and Fort. Riley, Kansas. (These are all special places, I have lived, worked or were military moments in my life...or are simply special because of family and friends).
"Home Town Heroes" is a piano driven vocal with a driving cadence recorded in my studio.
Sgt. Jessie Davila our Home Town Hero
Fri, Mar. 3 2006
I never had the honor of personally knowing Sgt. Jessie Davila. He was killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq last month while protecting others.
Today he came home to his final resting place at the Kansas Veteran's Cemetary at Fort Dodge and a community that turned out from all over the State of Kansas to honor him.
"We Honor Your Name by Candlelight" is one of my songs that honors Sgt. Jessie Davila and every one of our brave, fallen warriors who have died to protect our FREEDOM.
While, I actually wrote the lyrics to this song several months ago......It was only after attending the three military funeral services for him today that God gave me the music to celebrate his life and death and Heroic Sacrifice. The music is an explosive release of my own personal emotions and grattitude to Sgt. Jessie Davila....and a portrait of our community's love and appreciation for him....and each one of our Fallen Heroes...who fought and died to keep us FREE!
My prayers go out to Linda Klaus (His step-mother, and family) for the comfort of the Holy Spirit in their loss.

I Cry When I Write These Songs for Our "Home Town Heroes"!
Wed, Feb. 22 2006
This past week, I started playing Demos from my upcoming CD, "Home Town Heroes...U.S.A."
What's the response from listeners?
A lot of moms start crying when they hear
1. "Home Town Heroes"
2. "Every Time I See A Soldier"
3. "Protecting America Today"
4. "Baghdad Lullaby"
5. "We Honor Your Name By Candlelight"
These are sobering, heart stirring, songs of valor even for us macho men.
I cried when I wrote these songs...and I cry when I sing them.
A friend told me, "Max, You really have a passion when you sing these songs for our Soldiers, Veterans, and their Families!
It's true!
I do!
I believe these songs will touch your heart too!
Contemporary Songs for God and Country
Wed, Feb. 15 2006
I've been in the studio for a couple of days this week recording rough cuts for my new CD, "Home Town Heroes...U.S.A."
Glenda Patterson of KDCC Radio 1550 and Keith Tallent, (the host of "Live & Local") KGNO Radio 1370 ( got a sneak preview of one cut, "Protecting America Today".
The song got "2 Thumbs Up" from our radio personalities.
Glenda says "It's a real leap over the cliff!"
Keith asked me, "Did you really write this?"
And the answer is yes.
Between my original music...and some rocket fuel arrangements...I believe you will find "Home Town Heroes...U.S.A" real "Contemporary Songs for Today's Soldier" as I honor our U.S. Troops and their families!
This is STILL "Mellow Music for a High Stress World" but is quite a dramatic departure from the acoustic sound of my first CD "Follow Your Heart".

More Events Planned to Honor American Soldiers
Fri, Dec. 2 2005
I ran into Brian Webber at Wal-Mart today.
This is the outstanding young man I told you about who has an incredible spirit for God and Country.
Brian tells me he is working on several other special events to honor our American Soldiers.
I want to thank Brian Webber, a young 23 year old man with wisdom far beyond his years.... for his outstanding leaderhsip in organizing this solemn event here in Dodge City, Kansas.
The late Martin Luther King once said, "If you care, you'll be there."
Approximately 45 people who really cared were there....(Veterans, Military Personnel, Families, Both Old and Young Adults) came to the Knights of Columbus Hall to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom.
Brian, thank you for inviting me to read many of the names of our fallen warriors.
The event was also attended with special introductory remarks from Pat George our Representative to the Kansas State Legislature, and Terry Lee the Mayor of Dodge City....with news coverage by Audrey Martin of KBSD-TV, and photographer Michael Schweitzer of The Dodge City Daily Globe.

"Eye of the Hurricane"
Sun, Oct. 23 2005
The Wrath of Hurricane Wilma in Florida....It's still too early to assess all of the damage and destruction.
Our family survived Hurricane Andrew in Miami, Florida back in 1992. It was a horrible ordeal and Hurricane Katrina was 1,000 times worse than what we all suffered in South Florida at that time. Hurricane Rita also did her damage.
Actor John Cusack recently appeared on the David Letterman Show and spoke about Hurricanes. He mentioned that the outer edges have winds of 160 or more miles per hour. But,if you fly inside the inner eye of the Hurricane, winds are only about 3 miles per hour.
"Eye of the Hurricane" was written after our family's personal experience with Hurricane Andrew...and recorded after the 4 Hurricanes ripped through Florida last year. This song flys in the aftermath of Katrina, Rita, and Wilma...and all of the storms in life... "Eye of the Hurricane".

A Musical Blast From Out of the Past!
Fri, Jul. 29 2005
After 40 years, this has been a great week re-connecting with long lost musical friends that I worked with in the 7th Army Soldiers Chorus in Europe (1964-1967). Charlie McDaniel (A great 1st tenor in our modern folk group, "The Village Green Singers") and Dave McCubbin who is a professional musican in Kansas City.
I've managed to stay in touch with good friends Anthony Lopez and Leeam Aldouby (New Haven, CT; and Trumbull, CT.) over the years.
ALERT: We're looking for Len (Leonard) Novy last known to be working in the Hollywood, California area. Also Jim Ketchum (Cedar Rapids, Iowa ?) and William (Bill) S. Shea (Originally from Topeka, KS.)
If you know where any of our missing musical friends might be, I hope you'll contact me and let me know about them.....and any members of the 7th Army Soldiers Chorus (1963-1972).
Thank You!

Outstanding Christian Concert in Wright Park Last Night
Thu, Jul. 7 2005
Please let George and Kent Henrichs know what an outstanding Christian Concert they put together in Wright Park last night! These events don't happen by accident. It takes a lot of work to put this kind of a quality concert together.
I'm guessing that there were 15-20 of us who sang and probably 100 in the audience.
Todd Guinn did a great job as Master of Ceremonies and sharing some of his original praise and worship songs.
"Miracles of the Heart" is a trio of teenage girls from the First Christian Church. What a sound and to see these young girls using their talents for Jesus!
Mike Gilmore, George Henrichs, Herbert White, and Jim Sherer had that rich masculine sound in a couple of gospel quartet numbers.
Dee Dee Royale...What can I say? Dynamite comes in small packages! What a rich and powerful voice!
Mrs. Page sang, "The Hem of His Garment" and another selection that made Jesus come alive for all of us. Jim Sherer soloed with a Sandi Patti song.
George and Kent Henrichs also sang an outstanding arrangement of "Feed My Sheep"! A rich New Orleans Blues Sound premeated their instrumental background track.
Ms. Larson led us in silent prayer for victims in the London terrorist bombings...and sang two beautiful selections.
I thought the sky would split open and Jesus would appear in the Second Coming when Bob Salm delivered two incredible trumpet solos!
Please forgive me that I missed the name of the young lady who sang next. Another beautiful voice lifting up our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
I closed with two songs from my CD. "John 3:16" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" plus a special tribute to honor veterans in the audience. You truly are my Heroes! Thank you and God Bless You for your service to our country in peace time and war...to preserve our freedoms here in America!
It was also wonderful to see good friends and classmates Burt and Mary Lou Davis. I had not seen them since our class reunion 5 years ago. They travel...all of the time in their retirement. Now they are on their way to Alaska, where Burt smiles and says, "It's cooler there".

We even saw good friend Tom Heydman on guitar for a couple of songs.
Back At Buster's Again (Sun City, KS)
Fri, Jun. 24 2005
If Buster's seems like it is out in the middle of nowhere...that's because it is. Located about 23 miles South of Pratt...
People will drive from everywhere for one of those Bill Bunyan (The Hamburger King of Kansas) specials served up by Owner/Rick Lambert or Katie in the Kitchen when I sang tonight.
Now Rick Lambert also serves up the Best BBQ Ribs this side of the Mississippi River.
Buster's is an old time country bar on one side...and on the other side you'll find a family oriented Supper Club that offers great musical entertainment on Saturday nights. (This is my 2nd performance at Buster's...and Rick has invited me to come back soon. So we are still working out my next performance date).
Buster's is located in the real deal "Cowboy Country" where you'll find a dozen cowboys and their cowgirls come in with "spurs" a jinglin'.
You'll also find business groups coming from Wichita and all over Kansas, plus engagement parties, families, motorcycle clubs out for a friendly ride, and tourists from everywhere in the United States.
I'm a Gospel singer, but also specialize in Cowboy Classics here.
Be sure to look for my photo and newspaper interview on the celebrity wall.

Bunyan to play at Wright Park tonight
By Mark Vierthaler Dodge City Daily Globe
Max Bunyan of Dodge City plays guitar in this file photo. Bunyan began his music career last year and has since appeared in more than 80 performances. He will appear tonight as part of the Summer Concert Series in Wright Park. Admission is free. Bunyan begins the show at 7 p.m. with a piano performance. Courtesy Photo
At 7:30 tomorrow night, it will be revealed what the early Beatles, a doo-wop group, Ray Charles, Elvis, Simon and Garfunkel and Dixieland all have in common. Namely: Max Bunyan has integrated their styles into a remixed version of "Home On the Range."
Bunyan will continue as number three in the Summer Concert Series in Wright Park tonight. Since jazz and alternative fans have had their time in the limelight, cowboy gospel steps up to the plate.
"I primarily do gospel," says Bunyan. He wears an American flag western shirt. A cowboy hat sits on his head, white hair poking out from underneath. He leans forward in his chair while talking.
"Not black-urban gospel," he laughs. "Maybe white-acoustic gospel." Bunyan says his music comes in various flavors. While at the keyboard he plays what he calls "Jesus jazz." A mix of jazz and inspirational lyrics.
The keyboard isn't his only means of delivering his message. "The guitar is my primary instrument," he says. "I use the keyboard while I'm recording." In his living room, an acoustic-electric guitar sits on a stand. Next to it is a keyboard.
Bunyan composes his own music and lyrics. He likes to describe his work at contemporary Christian gospel. "My songs touch on Jesus," he says. He's not exclusively gospel however. Some of his songs have a distinctly local flavor to them. So local, that some of his songs are even inspired by local figures.
"This is my hometown," says Bunyan. "I love Dodge City and the people in it. I like to write songs about people here in Dodge City."
One song, titled "Ride Cowboy Ride" was written for Dr. RC Trotter. Bunyan said he witnessed a speech by Trotter on the merits of the Dodge City rodeo. "He gave a stirring, rousing presentation about Dodge City Days and the rodeo," he says. "He talked about why our rodeo here is important in the whole chain of events."
